It is urgent to improve male reproductive health
Male reproductive health is often ignored. However, it is very important for health and family happiness. Sperm quality is a "barometer" of male reproductive health and an important factor in determining the fertility rate. In China, one out of every seven to eight couples are infertile. Due to the large number of infertile people, about 300 million men in China need to examine the sperm every year. Meanwhile, there are 27 sperm banks in China, which will also need sperm examination. Sperm quality testing requires the analyzer to separately check the health of sperm, comprehensively evaluate the quality of sperm, and determine the survival of sperm, so as to confirm the cause of male infertility, find out the appropriate treatment plan, and completely solve male infertility.

The development of the domestic sperm quality analyzer has gone through from imitation to innovation. In the beginning, neck-jamming technologies were mastered by foreign brands. With the continuous enhancement of R&D, domestic equipment shares the market equally with imported equipment, and even do better in cost performance. However, the majority of mainstream sperm quality analyzers still use manual counting or computer-aided analysis, which has the problems of difficult quality control, cumbersome and time-wasting detection process. In order to realize non-destructive, accurate, convenient and more intelligent detection, it is urgent to find new solutions in the hardware, analysis algorithm and clinical use. These drawbacks are also the source of innovations.

Intelligence speeds up and AI realizes “corner overtaking”

Professor Teng Xiaoming, member of the Chinese Society of Reproductive Medicine and deputy leader of the Embryologist Group, said that after more than two years of R&D, a new generation of domestic intelligent non-destructive sperm quality analyzer has achieved a new breakthrough by late-mover advantages. AI non-destructive sperm quality analysis can ensure more objective, repeatable and accurate results, and has the advantages of full automation, high throughput, real-time and convenience, and can meet the increasing needs of reproductive centers, andrology departments and sperm banks.
The world-leading intelligent non-destructive sperm quality analysis technology is independently developed by China, which realizes the technical innovations and breakthroughs in multiple fields and fills four technical vacancies, including sperm morphology detection by live sperm, non-destructive capture of sperm morphology, intelligent sperm morphology analysis and real-time synchronous detection of sperm concentration, motility and morphology. At the 4th Shanghai-Wuhan Tongji Reproductive Medicine Forum, the research project cooperated with 20 reproductive centers in China and is still in the experimental optimization. It will be applied clinically to realize intelligent detection and analysis of sperm. The application for the contest will further promote the optimization and clinical applications.

Professor Teng predicts that the trend of sperm quality testing will be the all-round photography of the sperm movement and morphology in the natural state using an auto-focusing high-speed dynamic imaging system. Through the multi-sperm synchronous tracking algorithm, dynamic tracking of each sperm was performed in the video of unstained live sperm to comprehensively capture the multi-directional morphological images. AI algorithm makes the overall quality of sperm detection efficient, fast, accurate and objective. Besides, the active and well-shaped sperm can also be selected by AI for use in the intracytoplasmic sperm injection to help improve the success rate of IVF. In addition, it can also assist in clinical treatment and realize the intelligence of the whole process. With the strengthening of R&D, the sperm quality analysis is expected to be portable at the mobile end of the customer, thus saving time for the customer.


Policies support the future localization
With the development of science and technology, independent R&D is increasingly important. National and local support policies have been introduced to promote the localization of medical equipment by R&D, product procurement and product listing. It is reported that some of the domestic medical device bidding projects do not accept imported products. Since this year, Zhejiang, Guangdong, Sichuan and other places have issued the latest "procurement list of imported medical equipment", which states that domestic equipment is given priority to and can compete with the imported equipment in the imported list. At present, domestic sperm quality analyzers have the following favorable conditions. First, there are huge domestic clinical needs, clinical samples and medical records, which can provide more innovative points and clinical verification resources for the development of domestic analyzers. Second, decades of accumulation and rapid development of the domestic medical device industry in recent years provide a complete supply chain, which can quickly produce the qualified equipment. Third, the rapid development of AI in recent years provides many talents and technical accumulation.
The contest represents the national emphasis on technological innovations, which aims to integrate innovative resources to help enterprises overcome technical problems and achieve high-quality development, and promote the combination of technology development and clinical. It is estimated that the male infertility market is about 500 million CNY, and there is still a large gap between the current and theoretical volume. The former is only equivalent to 6.41% of the latter (500 million CNY / 7.8 billion CNY), which means that there is still a large incremental space. With more mature technical reserves and industrial policy, the core technology breakthrough will continue to drive the localization of sperm quality analyzers. With the integration of AI and medical treatment, intelligent non-destructive sperm quality analyzers will play a greater role in reproductive health.
